Beach Volleyball Rules

All normal volleyball rules apply with the following exceptions:

  1. Games are played with 6 players on the court (with a min of 2 males & 2 females). Teams may play with less players, but the gender requirements should try to be met. If the minimum gender requirements cannot be met, then a forfeit can be enforced, or captains can come to an agreement prior to the game starting to alter the rules to get the game played (to try and avoid a forfeit). All forfeits must be enforced prior to starting the game. If a forfeit is not explicitly enforced before the game begins, then the game will count.
  2. The captains may agree to waive the rules regarding minimum people but this should be decided before the game begins. IF IT IS SPECIFICALLY AGREED THAT THE GAME COUNTS, IT COUNTS!
  3. Matches are 60 minutes in length. This includes warm up time. If you choose to warm up for 15 minutes or 5 minutes, you still only have a total of 60 minutes on court. The team who wins the most games in that time, wins the match. All games are played to 25 points with rally point scoring (a point is scored on every serve) and must be won by 2 points. All games are capped at 27 points. If a fourth game is started, the game only counts if a total of 15 points or more is reached (e.g. 10-5, 9-6). This rule should be applied to the final set of the match, whether it is the 3rd, 4th, or 5th set. In that final set, it only counts is a total of 15 points or more is reached.
  4. There are no referees, so teams are required to call their own violations, and are expected to be honest and foster a high level of sportsmanship at all times. If there is a dispute, please re-serve the point.
  5. A player may not block, spike or double-fist to return a serve.
  6. The serve is allowed to contact the net. (e.g. a serve contacting the top of the net and goes over the net, it is still in play).
  7. A player is allowed to volley a serve, and is allowed to volley any ball over the net. When volleying, you do not have to be square to the path of the ball.
  8. Open hand tips and directs are allowed.
  9. If a player blocking touches the ball on the block, it is not counted as the first touch. The blocker may play the ball off his/her own block. These two contacts are counted as one touch.
  10. Players may play the ball off any part of their body. Please be careful should you decide to kick the ball.
  11. Players may not touch the net at any time during play.
  12. There is a serve limit of 5 serves. See area specific notes below. (Teams can choose to play either method outlined below - regardless of area - as long as both team’s agree prior to the game starting.)
  13. For Milton leagues, after a player's fifth serve, the team retains service possession but must rotate to another server.
  14. For Mississauga, Burl/Oak and Hamilton leagues, after a player’s fifth serve, the ball is turned over to the opposing team.
  15. Players rotate off when rotating after their serve.

Intermediate Plus Exceptions

  1. Only when receiving a serve or a spike, it is permitted for one player to touch the ball twice. For example, you bump the ball with your forearms and it comes back and hits your chest, this is permitted but still counts as two hits so the ball must go over the net on the next touch by another player.
  2. It is permitted to contact the net, provided that it does not interfere with the opponent’s play (E.g. a blocker hits the mesh of the net with their stomach or brushes the net on the way up or down). Examples of interfering with the opponents’ play:
  • A player interferes with the opponent’s play while penetrating into the opponent’s space under the net.
  • Touching the top band of the net.
  • Taking support from the net simultaneously with playing the ball.
  • A player touches the ball or an opponent in the opponent’s space before or during the opponent’s attack hit.
