Basketball (4-on-4 Co-ed & Men's)

4-on-4 Basketball Rules (Updated Winter 2024)

  • A team defaults if they arrive 15 minutes late from the scheduled start time. The opposing team has the option of waiving the default and playing the match.
  • The game is played with 4 players per side on the court always. Female players are welcome to play but are not mandatory on the court.
  • Games are typically two 25 minute halves with a 5 minute half time. However, if games start late, the time will be reduced.
  • *When 3-point line is present* All baskets made inside the arc-line count as 2-points. Baskets made outside the arc-line count as 3-points. Successful free throws count as 1-point each.
  • *When there is no 3-point line everything counts as 1-point*
  • A player's feet must be completely behind the three-point arc line at the time of the shot or jump in order to make a three-point attempt; if the player's feet are on or in front of the line, it is a two-point attempt. A player is allowed to jump from outside the line and land inside the line to make a three-point attempt, as long as the ball is released in mid-air. (Referee has final say on whether a shot attempt was made behind or on the arc-line)
  • A floating backcourt will apply on smaller courts (For example: Kings Court Etobicoke Court C)
  • Scores and time should be kept by one of the players sitting off. (Alternatively, an on-site convener can also perform this task).
  • A jump ball will start each game. A jump ball will also be called if possession of the ball can not be decided on by the referee.
  • The clock does not stop when a basket is scored.
  • All FIBA rules apply in this league except: 3 seconds in the key and illegal defense.
  • Goaltending is not allowed.
  • Referees will call all fouls and will give out technical fouls to players that consistently criticize their calls. (Players that receive two technical fouls will be asked to leave the game.)
  • After a foul, the ball is taken either from the side or at the top of the key. If the ball is taken at the top of the key, the player must pass the ball off first before scoring.
  • Teams will be allowed 7 team fouls during each half where each subsequent foul thereafter will result in a free throw. During the last 10 minutes of each half, foul shots will be awarded for fouls called during a shot attempt but, whichever comes first - 7 team fouls or the last 10 minutes, the Average Joe foul shooting system will be in place. Successful foul shots will be counted as one per basket and missed foul shots can be rebounded on the final attempt. Time will not stop during a foul shot. During the last 2 minutes of each game, teams will have 25 seconds to attempt a shot. The referee will be responsible for the count down.
  • You may rotate in extra players during play only if your team has possession.
  • There are no timeouts.
  • Official games will not start unless both teams have 4 players each. As per referee policy they will not referee a game if this standard is not met or if a game has been forfeited. Teams may recruit Average Joe members from other teams to avoid a forfeit during the regular season (this includes members to act as subs). Teams have 15 minutes after the scheduled start time to assemble their 4 players to begin the game. The clock will start running.
  • Referees/staff may alter rules based on court dimensions as these can vary at each venue.
  • Playoffs: During playoffs, teams need their rostered players to play unless both teams agree to waive this rule.
  • Playoffs: Overtime - A jump ball will start ALL overtime games. In the event of a tie during the PLAYOFFS, a 3-minute game will be played to decide the winner. If the score remains tied after the first overtime, then a 2-minute sudden death period will be granted. There will be no breaks in-between overtimes. The first team to score a point; foul shots included, will be declared the winner of the game. There are no overtime games during the regular season and any team fouls accrued during regular game time will be counted in all over times.


Note: Should players request an explanation from a ref on why a call was made, please direct your team captain to discuss this with the ref on your behalf. Team captain's are required to ask in a calm and concise manner (yelling or berating a ref will not be tolerated). The only permitted time to discuss calls with referees is prior to, during half-time or after your game has concluded. Questioning referee calls during a game is not permitted (as they will not take time to stop the game to discuss calls with you).
